On November 22nd, a public consultation was opened on the adoption of the Italian Bioeconomy Strategy, promoted by the Italian Presidency of Council Ministers. The consultation will be open until 23 December 2016.
The Italian bioeconomy encompasses the sustainable production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources and waste streams into value added products such as food, feed, bio-based products and bioenergy. The strategy aims to provide a shared vision of the economic, social, environmental and international cooperation opportunities and challenges associated with the implementation of an Italian bioeconomy rooted in the territory.
Today the Italian bioeconomy is worth EUR 250 billion/y and 1,7 million jobs, the declared objective of the strategy is to increase this output by 20% in 2030 by focusing on six priorities:
- moving “from sectors to systems”;
- creating “value from local biodiversity and circularity”;
- moving from “economy to sustainable economy”;
- moving “from concept to reality”;
- promoting the bioeconomy in the Mediterranean area.
