The Toulouse University Hospital has undertaken a major energy savings program and the redeployment of its Energy Unit. As a result, it has contracted Purpan Energies Santé, a Dalkia France subsidiary, to design, build and operate its future biomass heat boiler. The boiler plant will have two 2.5 MW wood-fired boilers that will provide 90% of the site’s heat requirements. A condensation heat recovery system, a very efficient solution in energy terms, will recover the energy from the condensation of the plant’s flue gas.
This new boiler will consume 9,000 metric tons of wood fuel a year sourced from the local forestry industry.
With its emphasis on renewable energy, the future Purpan Energy Unit is scheduled to enter service in October 2013. It will reduce the future site’s energy expenditure by two thirds and avoid the emission of 5,300 metric tons of CO2 a year, that is, the equivalent emission of 3,000 vehicles.
